Which EV should I buy?

Answer 14 questions about how you drive and where you live. You get one pick, with the running cost and the reason it won.

Your logbook

Subsidy and power price change by state.

3. Long trips per month

Counts each trip as about 300 km by car, 150 km on two wheels.

4. Personal garage or fixed parking?

No garage means you charge in public. That costs more, so longer-range models score better.

5. Usual passengers?

Three or more people means a car. Two-wheelers seat two.

6. Usual luggage?

Suitcases need a proper car boot. Bikes carry almost nothing.

7. After-sales service?

New brands ride well but have few service points.

8. Max budget?

Counts the price after your state subsidy. Anything over budget drops to the bottom.

9. Crash safety?

15 cars here have a 5-star crash rating. The eC3 has a 0-star one. Scooters and bikes have no ratings.

10. Minimum car boot?

Cars only. Two-wheelers are judged on your luggage answer.

11. Car size?

Pick a size and two-wheelers drop out. When two match, the one that uses more of your budget wins.

12. Battery swap instead of charging?

The Activa e, Vida and RV400 offer swap or removable packs. Only counts if stations are near you.

13. Driving comfort?

Ratings come from Indian road tests: seat, suspension, noise. Not spec sheets.

14. Passenger comfort?

Rear seat for cars, pillion for two-wheelers. Both come from reviews.

Common questions

How much does charging cost at home?

It depends where you live. Home power runs from about Rs 2 a unit in Goa to Rs 9.5 in Maharashtra. A 40 kWh car battery at Rs 8 a unit costs about Rs 320, and that gets you around 270 real km. A scooter battery of 3 kWh costs about Rs 24 for roughly 100 km. Petrol at Rs 105 a litre works out near Rs 7 a km in a car that does 15 km to the litre.

Do I need a home charger?

No. A normal 15A socket fills most cars overnight and most scooters in four to six hours. If you have no fixed parking, plan for public charging at Rs 13 to Rs 25 a unit, and expect to charge more often on shorter-range models.

Why is the range lower than the company claims?

These are real-world numbers from Indian road tests and owner reports, not lab figures. A car sold as 400 km usually gives 250 to 300 km with the AC on in mixed traffic. Where tests disagree, the table keeps the cautious number.

Which states give a subsidy?

It changes often. Maharashtra, Odisha, Assam, Jharkhand, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh pay cash on cars or two-wheelers. Delhi, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Kerala give road-tax and registration waivers instead. Punjab’s scheme has lapsed. Your state note shows where it stands, and every price on this page already has the subsidy taken off.

Can electric scooters and bikes do highway trips?

No. They are city vehicles here, with 75 to 160 km of real range, and no crash ratings exist for them. If you ride two or more long trips a month, pick a car.

How does the pick work?

Every model starts at 100 points. Points come off for anything that does not match your answers: over budget, too few seats, thin service where you live, a stiff ride, a small boot. Points go on for a 5-star crash rating and for battery swap. When two models tie, the one that uses more of your budget wins.
